Thunder Run 10k

This was the first year of the Thunder 10k run at Catton Park. Surprisingly it was not only sponsored by Wiggle but also Runners World.

It’s an ideal setting to start the whole Enduro6 weekend off. As with most runs now it’s pricey but with all the stands and camping available that some how makes up for the additional cost. The weather helped as ever, the first sunny day of the year.

The field for this run was small with only 50-100 entrants. Yet that didn’t stop Pat Adams have his usual thanks and speech that he does on the bigger stages. Very fitting really.

From the team Mick turned out for the run. Having not done over 5 miles this side of Christmas the plan was to take it steady and enjoy.

The course was pretty much the same route as the Enduro6 mountain bike course with a few sections removed. Very challenging but enjoyable, as if you are in the middle of a Nike advert on the open land or cruising through Forest tracks. It had everything from hills, stones, trees, roots, grass, rubble and the odd down hill.

From the start the root went along the road on the grass to then hit a steep uphill climb across into the first section of woods. Out of the woods and then back to along the tractor road and down into camp. From there is into the little wood to weave in and out before again hitting the track to the next section of wood. This section involved climbs twists and turns. The final 3km left the wood and climbed up the tiring grass hill before switching back towards the camp. There were a few perimeter runs around the adjoining fields and then to the finish.

Being a very small field the worry was that everyone was quicker and last place could be achieved. Everyone looked slimmer, leaner and generally fitter. However the run went well. A slow first 3km to get in the rhythm started the race before picking up the pace a bit for the next 5km. After passing a number of burnt out runners there was still some energy left for a quick final 2km. A finish of 48 minutes and a personal best, what a result. What could be achieved on a flat road race? Who knows?

The finish included a nifty medal, an SIS recovery drink and a runner’s world bag filled with goodies. Not bad in the end for the £18. Listening to a number of finishers only praise could be given for the event. On that note it should be a much bigger event next year.
