Strathpuffer24

Many people have talked about doing it, but it seems that someone's finally taken the bull by the horns and organised a 24hour race, in northern Scotland, in midwinter... Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you - the Strathpuffer...

The Strathpuffer 24 hour race will take place on January 14-15th 2006 in Strathpeffer (used for Grundig World Cups back in the early days of mountain biking...) a little north of Inverness.

It's open to solo riders, pairs and teams of four. The event is being filmed by Triple Echo Productions for broadcast on BBC Scotland’s ‘Adventure Show’.

The course is in the forest at Castle Leod, previously used for a round of the World Mountain Bike Championships. The organisers say it will be "demanding but sensible, incorporating both single and double track that should be rideable in all weathers."

All times will be electronically recorded, employing the SPORTident system used at many top events. There will be ample cover for teams and their support as well as catering on-site and access to service facilities and spares. The event starts at 10am on the Saturday (so it'll be just about light by then... sunrise is around 9.30am and sunset will be around 3.30pm - that's a lot of darkness...)

The event will cost £24 per person, or a pound an hour.

The organisers promise that there will be a good range of facilities: Insurance, Race numbers, Electronic timing and computerised results a la Polaris, Toilets, Tents, Bonfires, Bike Washing, Lighting Tower, Battery charging, Showers nearby, Bike Shop nearby, Catering (or facilities for self catering), The village of Strathpeffer is close by too with shops, cafe etc.

More details can be found on the Strathpuffer Website

How hard can it be, eh?
